Black History Month

With Martin Luther King Day next week and Black History Month around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to introduce one of my favorite illustrator's Kadir Nelson. Kadir Nelson is an award winning Afircan American Artist whose work is known for it's celebration of the African American Culture.

Check out his book "I Had A Dream" for Martin Luther King Day or spend the month of February reading stories he illustrated about Obama, Michael Jordon, Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandala, Duke Ellington and many more.
Kadir Nelson books are picture stories but they can be appreciated by children of all ages from all backgrounds. However, for older children who need a good chapter book for Black History Month, we recommend the classic stories of Mildred Delois Taylor (especially suitable for Middle and High School Students)

More Leo Lionni

At our last meeting our Book Worms read 2 more Leo Lionni books.
We talked about the stories, it's characters and the major themes of friendship, curiosity, trust and appreciating our own unique place in the world. This meeting we'll expand on these books by looking more into the animals we read about. Our Book Worms will learn about reptiles, amphibians and fish and research facts about these animals.

Leo Lionni

During the month of March students will be exploring a collection of books written and illustrated by the classic children's author Leo Lionni. This week we will be reading It's Mine. A story about 3 selfish frogs who argue and bicker about everything.

After reading and discussing the story we'll make some frogs of our own. http://ziggityzoom.com/activity/frog-prince-rock-buddy

The Power of Words

This month our book club has been exploring the wonderful world of poetry. Our Young Scholars are learning that poetry can be funny, thought provoking, nonsensical, it can rhyme, or have have a beat. Poetry can be many things but most importantly, poetry can be a powerful form of communication. The videos below are amazing examples for how poetry transcends.
